Neneh and her husband Cameron McVey have contributed to a BBC 6 Music special called Sounds of A City, in which they discuss their role in launching Bristol bands such as Massive Attack and Portishead. Part of a wider series looking at UK cities and their individual music scenes, presenter Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy talks to some of Bristol’s famous exports including Massive Attack’s Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja, Mark Stewart, James Lavelle, Inkie, Roni Size and more to better understand how the city shaped their sounds.
Talking on the show Neneh said;
“When early hip hop happened, some people got really caught up in trying to emulate what they were hearing, to try and repeat it, but whereas in a place like Bristol, because of how people think and how they are, they made it their own.”
